Ali Karim (MD) came to us following his immense round-the-world journey, in-which he carried out a series of interviews with people about most significant experiences of their lives. However his long-form documentary film format ”needed a splash of paint” to bring their conversations to life.
The challenge was to find appropriate styles to match. So we set about creating artwork styles which would feel powerful and appropriate for such a set of stories – which were sequenced, yet simultaneously unique. Working with a fine artist to mimic the byzantine elegance of the fine art of the Qing Dynasty; a computer generated line-emphatic CAD to help viewers inhabit the restrictive and authoritarian atmosphere of North Korea; and an emotive, facial-focussed character style to encourage the necessary compassion and empathy that would accompany the story of a man struggling to escape the dictatorship of Kim Jong Un.
We continue to work with Ali on the rest of his series. The Documentaries are now in advanced talks with Netflix.
